My Start to Living 'More' Sustainably

Posted by Maggie D'Angelo on

I'm new to low waste living and definitely new to blogging so I thought the best place to start would be the beginning : )

Before I tried new 'swaps' or made any new sustainable purchases, it was really important to me to focus on reducing the existing junk and excess "stuff" in my life and clean everything out before moving forward.

Over the last several months, I've gone through every drawer, every cupboard and closet in my house and sold, donated and thrown away everything that was not necessary in my life and let me tell you, it felt GOOD! I followed the rule that if I haven't used it, worn it, or enjoyed it in at least the last year, then I don't need it!

I now have mostly organized draws, closets and cupboards that open and close with ease (my OCD friends understand what I mean!)

I was surprised at how much stuff I had unknowingly accumulated. I've sworn to use up (instead of throwing out) soooo many bottles of shampoo, body wash, hand soaps, house cleaners, etc. and once they are gone, I will do my best to not buy them again!

This process has taken wayyy longer than I expected but one that I'm sure will feel awesome when I can finally throw away that last plastic shampoo bottle and try the new plastic free shampoo bar that I just couldn't resist : )

What I've learned is that this whole 'living more sustainably' thing does not happen overnight, and I am good with that. I don't feel it necessary to put a stake in the ground and officially claim low waste. But I'm excited for the few small changes I've made so far and look forward to making lots more!

On that note, here are a few super easy swaps you can make TODAY that I've enjoyed eliminating from my life. Cheers!

1. Reusable Water Bottle

2. Reusable Shopping Bags

3. Reusable Produce Bags

4. Reusable Straws

5. Reusable Cutlery

Please note: this isn't a blog only for those that want to be low waste, no waste, plastic free, vegan, etc etc etc..... It's for anyone who supports making more informed choices and are interested in living more sustainably! I am far from low waste living today, but I am passionate about living more responsibly and I look forward to sharing my journey with you!
